Summary0002140: Items are hauled to bins before the bins are installed into the correct stockpile.
DescriptionSometimes when a stockpile is created or modified dwarves will haul goods to a bin set to be installed in that stockpile *before* its been installed there. They will haul items to this bin until a dwarf picks it up to haul it off to the new stockpile, at that point you'll get a series of "job item misplaced" messages. Once the been is installed in its new home that everything will return to normal. I'm guessing this isn't the intended behavior and its at least one source of that annoying error message.
Steps To ReproduceCreated or modify a stockpile to place items in bins.
Additional InformationIt may also work with barrels but I haven't tested that.

I've seen this since 40d. I can also confirm it happening with barrels, although since I usually have food hauling turned on for most of my dwarves, the filled barrels are don't sit in the furniture stockpile for too long, and are soon hauled to the food stockpile.

You can see the behavior more often with bins if you only have a few dwarves with Item Hauling enabled.

Edit: Also seen with seeds and bags (I used to use the trick where you only designate two-square seed stockpiles, one for each type of seed, and I routinely saw empty bags in the trade depot fill up with seeds).

This is normal, they did it all the time in 40D.

smjjames: I know its a longstanding issue, but it still seems to be a bug (it does generate a red message ingame). Some of the bugs still in the game date back well before the 40 series.

Perhaps the hauling changes mentioned in the devlog will fix this:
