I believe it's based solely on what your adventurer can actually see at any axact moment. It was the same way back in 40d as well (though, if memory serves, *not* in 23a).

Yeah, I actually took that screenshot in 40d. If it's intentional (which I really doubt because it looks terrible even by DF standards), it's inconsistent with the way the memory map handles other wall junctions -- it's not as if all smooth walls suddenly display as pillars when you can't see them anymore.

I see this sort of thing also in goblin towers at the end of a 1 tile wide wall. Its character display changes based on last line of sight.
