0001600: Troll dies dodging into wall
Full combat log for the troll:

The millitia commander attacks The Troll but She jumps away!
The Troll slams into an obstacle!

The troll was standing on a natural ramp, and seemed to dodge toward the south, into the natural wall. Creature description claims upper body is gone.

Millitia commander combat log only mentions the dodge.

Troll left "Troll corpse" (not mutilated or anything).

Troll blood pattern:

That's the 'full combat log'? Nothing at all happened before she jumped into the wall?

Creatures that are dodging or charging can now mess up and smack into things. It usually stuns them and/or knocks them on the ground. Are you certain the troll wasn't on the verge of death before hitting the wall? If not, an explaination might be that the impact damage for smashing into things is based on the weight of the creature doing the smacking. So large creatures like trolls would take more damage from it(which kind of makes sense). A one shot kill is a little over the top tho.

'Upper body is gone' is displayed currently on all dead things, regardless of how they died, so that's unrelated.

There is something wrong with directions of jumping, dodging etc.
Happens with wrestling move 'throw' too, thrown creatures slam back into you sometimes.

Note that 'slams into an obstacle' isn't a death announcement. Creatures dodging from a high ledge and falling to their deaths will get the same announcement, unless it was *really* high, in which case it will say 'and blows apart.'

How closely were you watching this combat? Are you inferring information from the aftermath or were you there when they met, the troll dodged and fell over dead? If the former, is there somewhere above (3-4 z levels at least) that location the troll could have fallen from?

@derigo
Those two lines were all that was recorded, I watched that troll from the second it wandered into the area(periodically pausing to check the units list to see if anything more dangerous to my exploration teams had popped in).

@GRead
I was watching as the millitia commander ran right past and the troll turned into a corpse and splattered blood everywhere.
The troll was quite healthy and had only recently made it's way into the underground.
The troll was standing on the lowest area of the lowest underground cavern of the area
If 'slams into an obstacle' isn't a death announcement, then there is no death announcement.
The highest point within several grid squares is and was only one z-level.

I stored a save of the aftermath, but unfortuantely I had no idea this was going to happen, so I don't have one from before that.

Well, the spatter you posted up there does look like a fall\wall impact, and if it was already at the bottom it couldn't have fallen.

Unfortunately dwarf mode doesn't have death announcements in the combat reports, so it's impossible to know precisely how a hostile creature died, but it looks like you're right. I've been trying to replicate this in the arena and can't; the trolls won't dodge into the walls at all, ramps or no ramps. Not sure what to make of it... I don't suppose there's a tree or something nearby? Just grasping at straws here though.

I was just able to get a troll to charge into a wall in Arena Mode.
Edit: I suppose there's a distinction between charge and dodge. Probably the same general idea though.

Troll 1 charges at you!
Troll 1 attacks you but you jump away!
Troll 1 slams into an obstacle and falls over.
---

Basically all I did was create a no-skill troll in the lower "castle" then create a moderately experienced dwarf, let them fight around the walls and eventually the troll will hit stuff.

I'm really suspicious that there is something else going on here, though. Not only did dodging into the wall not seem to do any real damage to the troll, but they also seem fully capable of ripping apart a single unarmed/unarmoured dwarf in combat.

I'm confused. What's suspicious about your results L2U? Trolls are very large, they _should _rip dwarfs apart.

I should point out that you got the troll to charge into a wall which is totally different from having the troll dodge into a wall. The troll charged at you, you dodged, so he missed and hit the wall instead. If you watch the dwarf he actually moves out of the way. What the OP is saying is that the troll 'moved out of the way' into a wall when someone attacked it.

I meant suspicious in the fact that the combat log is just a dodge and a death. Feels like there might be more to the log than just that...

I have also recently edited my post to not that distinction between dodging and charging. I will continue testing!

A look at that save might help, if only to get a better idea of the area it happened in. If it's specific to some quirk of the locale replicating it in the vanilla arena will be impossible.

Edit: Addendum

The log is actually just a dodge and a collision. Dwarf mode logs don't record deaths, 'slams into an obstacle' simply means 'fell or hit an impassable object' you'll get it whether you fell 1 z-level, 5 z-levels, or a 100 z-levels, although the latter will probably include 'and blows apart'

This is the save, from seconds after the troll's death.
