0001706: Gaseous creatures' severed parts don't change state
Sethe Imepeilama Lebovodisa, a forest titan showed up on my map. It was a towering humanoid composed of steam and had a pair of spindly antennae and moved deliberately. I was warned to beware its webs (of which I saw none). It's tile was a capital H. It made a run for my fort, busted through some floor hatches and a few doors and was promptly curb stomped by a war elephant (which was awesome). He left behind two things: a puddle of water, which was promptly cleaned up, and a "steam" (!). The steam had the same icon as bones, had no value and weighed 1. Item description was "Sethe Imepeilama Lebovodisa's steam." shouldn't this disappear like any other steam in-game?
Get another titan with an oddball body and see what it drops upon its death.
I have a save of the creature before it got taken out by the elephant, if anyone wants to have a look. It was made with Mayday's version of DF 31.03. I did a few searches looking for a similar report but couldn't find anything. My apologies if this is a duplicate.

Are you playing with temperature or weather off? I wish I could say I've seen this, but it does sound plausible...

I believe the same thing happens in arena mode with fire men leaving "flames" behind.

Nope, weather and temp are on.

Yup, I've seen this as well.

You get similar with creatures made of powder. Their bodies turn to piles on death, but severed parts stay whole.

Slightly different (but still buggy) behavior in 40.06. Steam body parts from procedurally generated creatures remain as "solid" steam items until the game is saved and reloaded. After reloading, they immediately transform to "water" when the game is unpaused.

May be related to 0006432, another "delayed temperature change" bug.

This issue is still present in 43.05; behavior is identical to what Loci described. It seems to me that when creatures made of steam die, the upper body and everything still attached to it dissipates appropriately, while any severed body parts will fall to the ground as if they were solid or liquid, and only become water once the game is saved and reloaded.
