0001986: Military Units strip from their uniforms when given orders to kill.
I set up a military unit to use axes in general when fighting. They would go on their business and equip them while doing their day jobs (Inactive) as lumberjacks. However when I initiated a kill order, they threw down their weapons and charged in to wrestle with the target.

I then tried to specifically designate who gets what axe thinking that there was some confusion, however while I can see the axes laying on the ground, they do not appear on the weapon list at all.

I just reclaimed, and these axes still do not show up. They are Iron Battle Axes. The one axe that shows is a Copper Battle Axe, and he will drop even that if I give a kill order. They are not forbidden, designated for dumping, or melting. Why won't my dwarves use these axes?
Give your military uniforms.
Give them orders.
They drop weapons and charge.
Iron Battle Axes were produced on site/reclaimed. (Copper Battle Axe) was embarked with. Only (Copper Battle Axe) shows on the equipment list.

This happens (I think) because dwarves tend to continue wearing old equipment, even if they are assigned something else. Once you activate them, they realize they have a wrong uniform and begin stripping. Then, if they can't pick up the new equipment (usually because someone else is still using it), they proceed to go on without it.

The reclaim issue is a separate bug - nothing that was being used before abandonment will be usable after reclaim.

This is also probably a duplicate of 0000678, and I bet it's related to 0000892.

Might have to do with the armsmaster noble assigning Dwarf A's equipment to Dwarf B, yet Dwarf A will not relinquish it until he's forced to find his own equipment when activated.

I haven't yet tried to use only specific outfits. This might correct this, however I have a large mess of iron battle axes and iron spears that are not available for my (now) one military dwarf to equip. They are not shown when I choose specific weapon.

Upon viewing my stocks screen, I have the following weapons:
*iron battle axe*
+iron battle axe+
-iron battle axe-
(iron battle axe) (x2)
iron battle axe (x7)
(copper battle axe) (x2)
*iron spear* (x3)

-iron spear- (x2)
iron spear (x2)
(copper pick) (x4)
(bronze pick)

(spore tree blowgun)

However when I go into the military equipment screen and choose specific weapon I see only this:
(copper battle axe)

I think this may have something to do with the issue since so long as my lone axe dwarf is assigned that copper battle axe he will use it, but if I set up generic weapons or assign it to someone else noone uses any weapons. Could this glitch be a result of another glitch preventing valid weapons from appearing in the equipment menu?

Just gave him some move orders and some kill orders. He sucessfully hunted and killed a deer manually with my orders. He even used my axe. However, even though he is set to cut wood, he ignores any and all jobs before and after to instead do individual combat training. This I believe is related to a separate bug in the military system.

Edit: Just bought a pair of (bronze greaves) and a (-copper shield-) from a caravan. Neither of these show up on the equipment menu either.

I'm going to pin a save onto this so maybe someone else with experience with military bugs can test this out and see if it's related to old bugs or new ones entirely.

Toady may need an up-to-date save (0.34.02+) to fix this problem. It would be helpful for someone to upload a save to http://dffd.wimbli.com/ [^] and post the link here.

Don't happen after 34.01. Kill orders are bugged when the target flee the map, but never once the soldiers dropped their equipment.

Please reopen this report or PM me on the forums if you have a save that reproduces this problem in 0.34.11+.
