0002225: Unskilled dwarf prefers to fight with shield instead of axe
One of my dwarves with zero experience in axe using managed to kill an elephant in my current game. He did not gain axe skill, but is now a dabbling misc object user.

I recall having a squad of misc object users in my first (0.31.01?) game when creating a squad of axedwarves without appropriate skills.
Equip untrained dwarves with battle axes and let them fight in the arena.

What weapon did he use?

He used a local produced steel battle axe.

Did you check the combat logs if he was really using the axe? Just a thought was that maybe he got a hold of something else before or during the combat. But elephants don't really have any clothes or anything he might've been able to use, right? Did he have a shield or something else? Maybe he used that instead for some reason.

I'm assuming these kinds of items would count as misc objects, if they aren't I guess you can just ignore this. :D

He was nicely chopping away with his *steel battle axe*, sending elephant pieces everywhere ;)

I found out on another occasion that it was the shield bashing which gave him the misc. skill. Dwarves assigned to weapons which arent available yet due to hauling jobs or else use their shield as offensive weapon, thus gaining the misc object user skill.

Wasn't shield bashing training shield user skill back in 40d? Seemed more correct to me considering that shields were sometimes used offensively in real life.

In 40d (and even back in 23a), shield bashing trained Wrestling, and dwarves seem to prefer shield bashing over punching/wrestling.

It's possible the dwarf shieldbashed the elephant to the point of knocking it over, then switched to the axe to finish it off (which wouldn't have given any Axe experience, since attacking a prone target gives no experience).
