0004084: After using their first set of bolts, crossbowmen won't pick up more ammo
I've set some of my dorf to become crossbowmen. Made up a barrack. Checked that all of them had quivers and actual crossbows and set them to training. They head for range and shoot all their ammo into the practice targets and then get stuck with the "cannot follow order" thing. Ammo's plenty. Passage to my range is clear from every part of fortress.

Is this covered by 0001374? What kind of ammo are they carrying in their quivers?

I have the same issue, assigned plenty of Ammo (wooden and bone bolts) to my squad, which they pick up and shoot at their archery targets. As soon as they run out of ammo they spam the log with "equipment mismatch" and "cannot follow order", resulting in them idling for an indefinite amount of time. Some of them even HAVE bolts in their quivers while they "cannot follow orders".
Setting the squad to inactive makes them pick up more ammo and repeat the process in civilian state...

I tried setting up different ammo stockpiles, forbidding and reclaiming the ammo, regrouping and re-equipping the squad but it bugs out after one shooting session again. Besides, they had the ammo problem even before I started issuing bone bolts, also I tried playing around with the "use for training" and "use for combat" settings, but even when I try to let them shoot at goblin prisoners, most of them just don't react. Usually only 1 or 2 of them has ammo equipped at all time.

Same here, bone and wooden bolts. Have tried with cooper but they somply ran out of them in the first cycle and physycally couldn't experience this weirdness.

Found a workaround. You need to disable hunter/woodcutter/miner labours and unassign ALL bolts from hunters.

Would you mind if i use tiny mods? Like speed? Since it's a pain to wait a couple of years to get working military.
I'm getting it in every save anyway.

A save without mods would be preferable, but any save that demonstrates the problem should help.

I also have this problem with my marksdwarves "cannot follow orders"

I have tried everything I can think off, but it seems like after they emptied their quivers they wont reload, that is untill the next month and some new marksmen goes active and the same thing happens again.

I have been posting a lot about it here. http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=78556.15 [^]

I haven't seen any discussion about this in a couple of years but right now this bug is paralyzing my fortress (vanilla 34.11).

I have tried everything in Mercurio's list (disbanding and reforming the squad, deleting and re-adding the ammo types in the military screen, making bolts unavailable to hunters, making hundreds of brand new bolts, making sure bolts are not in bins, stationing and unstationing each squad, allowing and disallowing target practice, allowing and disallowing practice in the normal barracks) and I also followed the advice in 001374 to use a specific material ("iron") rather than "metal" in my ammo prefs.

I don't know if you're still in the market for saves but I uploaded one that might be useful since it seems ONE of my marksdwarves is willing to reload (who quickly became legendary because they're the only one doing any work).
