0004106: Broker becomes Legendary Appraiser but conversation skills don't rise above Dabbling
I've had this guy (the guy at the trade depot now) as the broker for six years now, and only he's at legendary appraiser, but dabbling everything else.

Also, possibly related, traders never seem to accept deals except where their profit is at least 50% of the value I'm taking.

She is not only your broker, but also your record keeper. I'm assuming you mean her conversation skills are only at dabbling, as she has no other labors turned on.

Have you accidentally kept her active at the trade depot? [q] -> [r]

She's been eating and drinking, but it seems she has no time to talk to people between the two jobs as she only has passing acquaintances.

As for the 'seems to accept deals with 50% profit' - can you give a more precise example?

Aren't all the skills like negotiator and judge of intent supposed to increase while trading? It never tells me the mood of the traders.

And I mean if I want good of value 1000 urist, I have to give at goods worth at least 1500 urist before they'll accept. I thought that the more you trade, the better deals you can get. Then again, he hasn't gained any negotiator skill, so that could be it.

But having said that, why isn't he gaining any of the other skills despite trading for years?

Have you used any utilites? It appears none of your dwarfs have higher than dabbling in any conversation skill.

I hadn't noticed that. Though I do try to keep them busy. And no, no utilities, only a graphics set. The ironhand one, I believe.

Keeping dwarves constantly busy (and likely preventing them from organizing parties) means they don't get opportunities to talk to each other and improve their social skills.

Well, they're not CONSTANTLY busy; there was a party a while back. But what I don't understand is shouldn't the broker gain those skills from trading?

The appraisal skill is gained the first time you open the trade window, but social skills are gained each time you perform a trade. If you trade all of your merchandise in one giant trade your trading dwarf will receive a minimal boost to social skills. If you perform multiple small trades instead your trading dwarf will gain significant social skills.
