0004384: Hunters kill animals which cannot be butchered
Observed: My hunter wastes bolts and time killing rabbits and bringing them back to the butcher's. They are too small to butcher (0000874) so they just get moved from the butcher's to the refuse stockpile.

Expected: The hunter should ignore creatures which can't be butchered.
Set a hunter to hunt on a map where the only wild animals are rabbits.

The hunters aren't specifically doing anything wrong (they are working as intended), it is the fact that some animals are too small to produce meat when butchered.

Since you mentioned rabbits specifically, I'm marking this as a duplicate of 0003993. You can continue discussion of the butchering problem there or in the parent 0001047.

I disagree that this is a duplicate. If 0001047 and friends are fixed this is no change required, but if they're working as intended then this is a problem that needs fixing.

The essence of your report is that small animals don't give meat when butchered. That duplicates the other reports whether fixed or not. If those issues are intentional, then your report would also be intentional and still a duplicate of those.

Sigh, my pride is wounded. :)

If you're going to close this as duplicate please at least close it on the right bug? This is related to certain already-dead corpses not being butcherable (0000874). The rabbits don't fail to produce meat because they're never butchered in the first place.

Reminder sent to: RossM

"so they just get moved from the butcher's shop to the refuse stockpile"."

Did you mean they are butchered but only produce skulls, or that the butcher job is never done and the entire corpse is moved to the stockpile? Were there cancellation messages? Can you corroborate the note at 0000874:0016322 ?

(edited on: 2011-03-30 01:29)
The butcher job is never done, the entire corpse gets moved to a refuse stockpile. If I try to queue a butcher job, it's cancelled with "Needs butcherable unrotten nearby item". At least some of the corpses have no blood spatter, but they've been sitting in an outdoor stockpile for a while now, so I don't know if that might have removed it. (But they still can't be butchered.)

Okay, then, that does make it 0000874. Thanks for the follow-up.
