Summary | 0004899: Building with metal bars uses "any Metalsmithing", but only trains Blacksmithing |
Description | I recently rebuilt my Trade Depot with metal bars. When it was done, I checked the room statistics and was surprised to find that the room had been built at base quality by my Legendary Weaponsmith. I checked his stats and found that he did not have Blacksmithing enabled but was now a Dabbling Metalsmith.
I repeated the process, and found that building a Trade Depot with metal bars requires "any Metalsmithing skill." However, doing so uses the Blacksmithing labor / (confusingly named) Metalsmith skill, no matter whether it is enabled or not, and not whatever skill you used to qualify to do the job (e.g. Weaponsmithing).
I recommend either...
(a) changing metal building construction to use the qualifying skill, or...
(b) restricting metal building construction to blacksmiths only. |
Steps To Reproduce | 1. Disable Blacksmithing on all Dwarves.
2. Enable Weaponsmithing, Armorsmithing, etc. on some dwarf with no experience in the Metalsmithing skill/Blacksmithing labor.
3. Construct Trade Depot with metal bars.
4. Check to see if the dwarf who built it has raised is now a Dabbling Metalsmith. |

Same thing for building metal roads. |
|
|
|
This dates all the way back to the 2D versions, when there was only a single "Metalsmithing" labor that covered all 4 metalworking skills. |

For metal bar roads, it seems no metal labor is required to be on at all. I have a novice architect with no metal skills or labors enabled (ever), who keeps insisting on building as well as designing my series of silver-bar roads, and is now dabbling in metalsmith.
Edit: Also, this potentially explains something else I thought was a (different) bug - why my bar roads kept ending up with zero quality, while my rock roads were looking pretty good when completed.

Confirmed in v0.40.11 with metal bridges. Legendary weaponsmith/armorsmith produced base quality bridges, while a legendary blacksmith produced exceptional quality bridges. |
