0005299: If fortress population drops to 1 child or insane dwarf, can't appoint/elect nobles when migrants arrive
This is similar to issue 141 (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=141 [^]) but I could not figure out how to reopen that.

What happened:
I lost all my dwarves to a forgotten beast except for an unconscious child. After some time (weeks? months?) new migrants have arrived! But nobody takes the title of expedition leader and so I cannot appoint any nobles.

Maybe if nobody is eligible to become the new leader at the time the old one dies the game won't try again later?

I can confirm this issue. All dwarves died except for a child, and upon immigration, no new nobles can be appointed.

Since there are hostiles left inside the fortress and I can't appoint a militia, it is impossible to continue playing.

Experiencing a similar bug, identical to issue # 0004871 (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=4871 [^]). Running v34.05. My Expedition Leader went melancholy as the last dwarf standing, and died shortly after the arrival of new migrants. No new leader was appointed, nor was a mayor elected after the fortress grew > 50.

It seems that if there is no eligible successor when a leader passes, it breaks the appointment system.

I am having the exact same problem as Gruthar. A solo melancholy dwarf remained, new settlers arrived, and the melancholy dwarf died. Nobles screen is blank.

The one possible conflating factor for me is that I am on a map with a lot of undead activity. There may be some chances that one of my old nobles is now walking dead but I can't find him and put him to rest.

My surface has been overrun with 100-200 zombies for five years. I did notice some old dwarves resurrect and took new names when they did; constructing engraved slabs for them seemed to put them to rest.

Similar problem in 0.34.11

Lost 6 of the starting dwarf in an early tantrum spiral. The last survivor went crazy. Shortly after the first migration wave arrived and the crazy dwarf soon died. I was unable to appoint a new leader or any other noble. I waited another migration wave in case but the problem remained.

Similar/Same problem in 0.34.11 (linux)
Tryed playing freezing, made a 2x2 farm plot, as undead creatures and other fun came about and killed everyone but my hunter. Hunter brewd a drink, went made, then migrants. (And they all died except 1 who was brewing a drink at the time..)

Now the nobels screen is completly blank, cannot manage fortress.

Playing the same save forward, a new expedition leader actually *was* appointed shortly after an annual autosave. Not sure exactly what's going on.

Saw the same thing in 0.44.11 after a pesky werebeast epidemic. It seems to have fixed itself quickly though - I made a military shortly after getting some migrants (appointing the commander through the military screen, not the nobles screen). Next time I looked at the nobles screen, all was back to normal!
