0005551: Migrant mother ignores baby
I received a small wave of migrants in my first summer, 3 adults and a baby. The baby is one year old but crawled on to the map by itself and was ignored by the mother. The mother then, in early Autumn, had another baby. Now the first baby has no hope of being cared for and is hungry/thirsty/dying.
The baby is not visible as a citizen in Dwarf Therapist.

Reminder sent to: fossphur

Please upload a save demonstrating this problem to http://dffd.wimbli.com/, [^] otherwise we can't do anything about this report.

Here is a link to the save. I thought I'd completely lost the save but I found one where the original baby had already died.

I had two migrant waves that each had a mother ignoring her baby. In both cases, saving and continuing caused the mother to seek the infant.

save: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=5971 [^]

I'm not sure how useful that will be, since saving seems to fix it. If it happens again, I'll see if saving while their migrant status is still on works any differently.

I also have a fortress showing this bug (in 0.34.07). First wave of immigrants arrived in the summer of the first year (131) -- a married couple and their two children. The first child has the title "Dwarven Child", and is a four-year-old boy, born in 127. The second child has the title "Dwarven Baby", and is a three-year-old girl, born in 128.

The "Baby" moves very slowly and erratically, and has been ignored by the other dwarves so far. The "Child" moves at normal speed and was able to report to the meeting zone in a timely manner. (The "Baby" did finally crawl into the fortress, but it was uncertain whether she'd do so before being picked off by wildlife.)

There are already two saves uploaded, so I'll just hold on to this one unless someone specifically requests it.

(Edit: later, after saving and reloading (possibly more than once), the mother is now carrying her 3-year-old "baby" around.)

In this same fortress, the "Child" (4-year-old boy) is now performing the "Plant Seeds" job. I don't know if this is the same bug or a different bug; children are not supposed to be performing that job as far as I know (they can harvest, but not plant).

"v-p" still says "A child does as it pleases!", and will not let me assign or unassign labors.

More immigrant waves, more data points.

As far as I can tell, if a family from a previous (abandoned) fortress shows up, their youngest child is *always* given the "Dwarven Baby" label, regardless of how old it is.

The Baby becomes a Child when the calendar advances to that child's birthday.

Saving and reloading seems to kickstart the mothering instinct, making mothers go pick up their babies. (Unless the mother's possessed, etc.)

Playing a fort genned in 0.40.05 that was moved to 0.40.06. I just received a one month old baby in the latest migrant wave, which the mother is steadfastly ignoring.

Oddity: Same fort, needed to reload a save before that migrant wave (for unrelated reasons), and just got a new migrant wave with a baby, in which the mother did turn back and pick the baby up.

0.40.08 - migrant mother ignored baby until I saved and reloaded. Baby was starving and immediately cured of starvation when picked up. Baby has alcohol deprivation sickness and "often feels lustful".

Immediately after reloading (I had saved so I could upload the world for this bug) the mother did this:

"Monom Uzolsashas, Metalsmith cancels Store Item in Vehicle: Seeking Infant."

I've only ever seen that right after a dwarf gives birth.

It seems the workaround is to just save and reload after each migrant wave that has babies in it.

Still present in 42.03. Same for me as BenLubar, save and reload causes mother to cancel task at reload to go pick up infant.

Can confirm as of 0.43.05 the issue still exists. Observed it in two different forts, two different worlds. Save + reload fixes it still.
