See issue 40: "This also happens when you try to make more pig iron or steel bars than you have refined coal for"

http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=40 [^]
2010-04-03 07:17
The same happens when running out of cloth (cancels making plant fiber bag: need 10000 cloth). Bags are produced normally until then, however.
2010-04-03 07:33
I feel like this is more a display bug than a workshop bug.
I seem to recall that the game is tracking fractions of things better now, or at least tracks them.
Cloth is harvested in units of 15000, for example, so that explains that "Need 15000 cloth" bug. I wouldn't be surprised if metal bars are being tracked in fractions of 150 now, so this just means you need 1-3 iron bars.
2010-04-06 02:35
I suppose, it's a new feature to measure all materials in smaller units for more precise management. If anything, the bug is that this manner of display does not work quite everywhere yet and only works in job cancellation announcements.

(edited on: 2010-04-08 01:23)
When this happened to me the option to make steel bars disappeared entirely from the smelter menu. I can't make steel bars anymore and building a new smelter does not resolve the issue.

Edit: VVV
Yeah, I have plenty of coke, charcoal, pig iron and iron bars.

2010-04-06 07:40
Arnold: Did you run out of pig iron, iron or coke? Smelting options don't show unless the ingredients are available.
2010-04-06 07:54
I can confirm after some raw tinkering that one metal bar is 150; see below.

[NAME:make lay pewter bars (use bars)]

The key part is [PRODUCT_DIMENSION] - I assume that for cloth or thread reactions it'd be appropriately higher.

So yea, this is a display bug.
2010-06-15 12:52
This is definitely not ONLY a display bug.
I cant make steel bars too but I have the ingredients!
2010-06-15 12:59
neverknown: could 0000434 be responsible for that?
2010-06-16 14:00
I have the same issue.

Confirming this. I had this happen just yesterday trying to make Pig Iron in a smelter, all materials available. 0.31.12.

Just got the same issue when making Steel bars. I have 10 Iron bars, 18 pig iron bars & hundreds of coke (plus another smelter turning bituminous coal into coke on repeat). I don't have any burrows assigned, I only have one bar/block stockpile which is 2 tiles away from the smelter where I'm trying to add the job to make Steel.

No burrows are assigned so it can't be 0000434. I was making Steel on repeat at the same smelter when I got the cancellation message. I had 2 iron ore smelting operations on repeat followed by a pig iron smelting then a steel smelting so the same smelter continually produces steel.

Edit: seems to have re-appeared after season change.

My last fortress was a thriving industry, I fought off pissed off angry humans with my squads, I had flooding rooms everywhere, and produced enough Iron to rebuild the Eiffel Tower with my magma forge. But I could'nt make steel. Could'nt stand it, started a new fortress from scratch. Same bug.
