0006551: Constructing on trees causes them to vanish
Building a construction (such as a floor, or a wall) on any tree tile causes the entire tree to simply vanish. No logs are generated, and the tree leaves behind sand tiles where it once stood. Any constructions supported by the tree will then collapse.

I couldn't find a tree with an available thick branch tile to test upon, but floors will destroy trees when built on their twig tiles, branch tiles, and the triangular "top" tiles.

The exact same thing happens when any root tile is mined out.

Any walls beneath the tree that vanishes lack a floor, and are shown as open space instead of a floor on the level above where they are constructed.

edit: looks like this aspect was fixed according to Toady's post for the 17th.

Bridges overlapping trees won't destroy the trees as they don't "replace" twigs or branches.

Nope, not fixed. I still lose the floor when the tree disappears. This was tested on a save from .03 though.

This bug is still present in .40.14, although the behavior is no longer observed when root tiles are mined out

I just had a tree just vanish in 40.24 (latest LNP with Phoebus graphics) while checking a bug report here: 0008884

Strangely, Detros and the initial poster had DF crash which would point towards 0008719. Just curious whether other people can reproduce what I saw for this save.

Just to sum it up, according to 0008719 it seems building in trees causes crashes for lots of people with version 0.40.24 while for versions 0.40.0 to 0.40.23 it seems to fall in the case reported here where it ends only with a vanishing tree.

I'm going to resolve this since it's been replaced by 0008719.
