0006732: Player receives announcements about wild animal births
Wild animals giving birth will trigger an announcement similar to when your cats/dogs produce a litter.
1. Embark at a site with a wild animal population that can reproduce

2. Wait until female (wild) animal gives birth

It is difficult to determine whether this happens for every wild animal, or only some of them. When it happened to me I had embarked at a volcano and dropped a cat down the caldera to scout out the caverns/magma sea. About 5 minutes after discovering the caverns I received a notification of the bugbats down below giving birth. This repeated for as long as the save file lasted.

Hmm. It may just be the bugbats then? They've been the only creatures I've received announcements about.
2014-07-12 15:31
This happens also in 34.11. I have seen this with a naked mole dog population.
2014-07-16 22:49
I get this message for bugbats & rutherers in 0.40.03
Zooming to announcement shows me unexplored underground area.
2014-07-29 08:30
Still in 0.40.5 but only with the bats it seems. Need a savegame?
2014-08-27 19:38
I've managed to reproduce this twice with carp in 0.40.10 ("Carp has given birth to carp fry").
2014-08-29 19:35
reproduced with bugbats in 0.40.10 as well.
2014-09-16 04:25
and magma crabs. (.11)
2014-09-27 14:16
An example with magma crabs (save from 0005969): http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=9469 [^]
The announcement should occur within an in-game day or so of unpausing.

2016-01-23 02:45
Still present (carp at least) in 42.05
2016-01-23 06:11
It's only a bug if you receive reports of births (or any other events) in unexplored/"invisible" territory.

Announcements.txt contains the line [BIRTH_WILD_ANIMAL:A_D:D_D], i.e. wild animals giving birth are worth a note and log entry in both adventurer and fort mode. This is intended game behaviour.

It's not clear to me whether there any valid reports of buggy behaviour on this ticket.
