Doesn't happen for me, so it may be world-specific.

Could not reproduce.

Tried this on multiple savegames and multiple buildings, but I didn't crash or note any unintended effects.

In my tests, after pressing TAB once (to look for the issue), I then pressed TAB enough times to reset my view to the default. Are you using the SDL or Legacy version? Do you get the same issue if you take your save file to another computer?

Ooh. Duplicated original bug!
Windows 7 Pro SP1 32bit, updates current.

Test A) = crash
Same process as with Linux, except on Windows:
1) Fresh unpack of Dwarf Fortress 0.40.01 SDL Win from http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/df_40_01_win_s.zip [^] (0.40.02 would not load the save file from 0.40.01)
2) Fresh unpack of region1.7z from http://dffd.wimbli.com/download.php?id=8813&f=region1.7z [^]
3) Press ESC 3 times (to get past intro), then choose "Continue Playing."
4) Load region1, "Nokzamanam"
5) (Leave paused) Immediately press TAB. Crash!

Windows 7 Pro SP1 32bit, updates current. Fresh unpack of SDL 0.40.02.

With Orkel's 0.40.02 save, I confirm the same behavior:
> Load it up and press TAB -> instant crash.

EDIT: I thought to differentiate whether this could be related to some key-binding oddity, so I wanted to change the "menu move" key from TAB, but can't find any place to change that key.

EDIT: When using a fresh unpack of Legacy 0.40.02, loading this save and pressing TAB, DF freezes (instead of crashing with an error message).

Loading this save in Linux and pressing TAB works fine:
Debian 7.5
uname -a:
Linux 3.2.0-4-amd64 <POUND>1 SMP Debian 3.2.57-3+deb7u2 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The arrival of mystery babies seems to be causing all of the tab problems. That part is fixed. Mystery babies are still out in the wild.
