0008362: Unretired fortress crashes after some game days
Playing on a 1x1 'nano' embark using DFHACK's embark-tools (although I don't have any reason to believe that is related).

This is a fortress that has been retired / unretired several times with an adventurer visiting it and dropping items off. The crash occurs on around the same day each time.

Unlike 0007999 the adventurer wasn't retired to the fortress (but to a nearby hillock). Unlike 0008078 it was not a worldgen fortress. There were a couple of 'NPCs' in the other list, though.

It looks like my adventurer considered the fortress her home, despite having retired elsewhere, because when I abandoned the fortress and unretired her she appeared in the fortress. Possibly she had migrated or wandered into the fortress area and that triggered the crash?

[EDIT] Note that game crashed at 9th limestone. So likely around the time the dwarf caravan / liaison should be arriving.

Tentatively it looks like this happens due to my use of DFHACK to LAIR the fortress. So can probably be safely ignored, unless it happens to people who don't use DFHACK to lair places.

Sorry.

[EDIT] Probably not that afterall (see later)

I've had another occurrence of this - without having used DFHACK to mark the fortress as 'lair'.

In this case a bunch of the dwarves were werebeast bitten (but have since died / wandered off). Possibly that caused the location to naturally be marked 'lair' by the game? I also noted that there were a whole bunch of 'outcast' animals.

The save game is on the 14th. Game crashes very early on the 17th.

Timing wise I suspect this has to do with the dwarf trading caravan.

There are also about 100 merchants on screen. :/

I've got another incidence of this. Again it's at a time that indicates the dwarven caravan may be to blame. This time there are no spurious traders or other odd people on the map.

Could I get a title change?

"Unretired fortress crashes when (presumed) dwarf caravan arrives"

Save file (DF 0.40.13) http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=9994. [^]
Also I checked and the first save file in this bug report also crashed in limestone.

[EDIT] Same location, spring. Crash on elf caravan arrival? Or maybe dwarf migrant arrival?
http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=9995 [^]

[EDITx2] I have since had some migrants arrive without crash. Not yet had any caravan arrive without crash.

[EDITx3] Just a quick note to say that this OLD save file still continues to crash in DF 0.40.17. I have still not yet had any new instances of this crash with NEWLY generated worlds since the latest post on this report.

Update: This is regarding a world generated in DF 0.40.14. I have just unretired a fortress after spending a few game days with an adventurer. There are now about 60 merchants in the 'other' category (mixed human and dwarf).

"Masses of merchants turn up in retired fortress" may be a separate bug, or it may have something to do with the crashes.

[EDIT] Didn't crash when the first dwarven caravan arrived.
However all the stray merchants swarmed the trade depot.

I'm not sure this is the same bug, but I'm getting crashes after un-retiring a fortress again. All these are games gen'ed in 0.40.19

Save file from before unretiring:
http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=10176 [^]

The fortress was run for a year, then it was retired and an adventurer was played for a while, then the adventurer died. Several days after unretiring the fortress the game crashed.

The game file uses Pheobus' Graphics Set and some minor changes to the Mountain entity.

http://imagr.eu/up/5480a4809bfe4_entity_default.png [^]

[EDIT] Here's a save from just before it crashes.
http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=10178 [^]

Note that the same problem has been seen in the Species War game
(unretire elf fortress from latest save http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=10177 [^] )
although that uses the 'All Races Playable' mod as well as Phoebus' Graphics

I tested, in DF 0.40.19, abandoning a fortress then reclaiming it without playing an adventurer in-between. I let it run for one game year after reclaiming and it didn't crash.

Same as above, only with playing an adventurer and a fortress in between. No crashes.

Tentatively, the crashes may only be associated with UNRETIRING not with RECLAIMING.

New world, DF 0.40.19, Phoebus Graphics' Set no other mods.
Retiring a fortress then immediately unretiring it without playing an adventurer in-between - crashed in Autumn (coinciding with Dwarf caravan) around 6 game months after unretiring.

Fortress before retiring: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=10243 [^]

Fortress after retiring: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=10244 [^]

Fortress shortly before crash: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=10245 [^]

No error log. Last lines in gamelog were
"The outpost liaison Dodok Rakustrithzam from Onol Memad has arrived.
A caravan from Onol Memad has arrived."

Possibly related? http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=8443 [^]

Visited an abandoned fort as an adventurer and there were merchants and wagons everywhere. Imagine they'd still be there if I reclaimed.

I believe that 0008497 is related to this, as I unretired the fort not long before the crash occurred on that save.

Yeah, the knowledge of plants/animals was not being initialized. Hopefully this'll be fixed now. It's unclear how many of the old crash reports will be affected.
