Summary0001016: Captain of the guard performs beating with combat weapon.
DescriptionToday I had one of my nobles ending a mandate and sentencing a random dwarf to beating. Instead of beating him unarmed, my captain of the guard attacked him with his (+bronze battle axe+), naturally hacking him in parts. That's obviously not an intended behaviour.
Steps To ReproduceHave your captain of the guard use any weapon, wait for some dwarf to be sentenced to a beating.

Back in 40d and earlier, there was a creature flag for "suppress wield for beatings/etc" that was specifically used by fortress guards when beating criminals; presumably, that flag is either no longer being set during beatings or is no longer being checked during attacks.

Seeing this as well in 31.12. Even with no quality wooden training weapons there are surprisingly large numbers of deaths from brains being bashed in.

I find that its easier to just leave the captain of the guard position empty, and you can ignore mandates.

Isn't this why The Hammerer had his hammer forbidden upon entering the fort in 40d?

Yes it is.

Unfortunately due to the way combat works now its still possible to brain a dwarf with even a no-quality wooden training weapon, and for some reason legendary blacksmiths have very thin skulls. :(

I had this a couple days ago in either 31.15 or 31.16. Same weapon too, bronze axe. One stroke, and so much for my jack-of-all-trades.

There are reports that this is no longer happening in version 0.34.11, but they haven't yet been confirmed - said reports consisted of criminals dying to a single punch to the head rather than a weapon strike, though it's possible the non-weapon use was voluntary (i.e. opportunity strike) rather than forced.

Independent testing, however, has confirmed that the "suppress wield" unit flag does still work correctly (at least in Arena mode, even with aimed attacks), though it also reveals the oddity that beatings are permitted to make use of bite attacks in addition to stance strike attacks (kicks) and grasp strike attacks (punches and nail scratches).

In the interest of clearing up whether that bug still exists (reported fixed for .34.11, but still presented as extant in forum rumours and on the wiki), i offer a testing save:

http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=10980 [^]

The justice screen has over a hundred old cases, and my test conviction triggered a beating. The captain of the guard definitely sheathed her steel shortsword for the beating and returned it to her hand when she went back to individual training. This strongly suggests the bug has been fixed (years ago, probably). Further beatings should be easy enough to produce by further convictions.

The test beating can be viewed in the latest combat reports.

Edit: further reference - in fact, ticket 0005532 reports the _fix_ as bug (armed guards "fail" to use weapons to issue beating), for .34.04. Unless someone manages to show repeatable weapon-beatings in .34+ (with conditions to actually have them), this bug should be considered fixed.

Thanks! I'll mark this as fixed in 0.34.01, unless anyone cares to track down the version where it was fixed. As usual, please PM a manager on the forums if you can reproduce this issue in 0.40.24+.
