|Description||Bit of a weird one for you here:|
141 pop. 80 military units counted on (m)ilitary screen.
Soft pop cap is 140, hard cap 180. Visitor cap is 40 and pretty much always filled.
I send 30 military out to explore some ruins. It takes 4 weeks for them to even get underway because one of the dwarves can barely walk and takes his sweet time getting to the border of the map. They return relatively quickly and trickle back into the fort. Now I'm at
135 pop, 78 military units.
One of the dwarves has been replaced by a blank space in the (s)quad selection. I can order the rest of the squad, but not the squad as a whole. Another human maceman shows up in the list, but cannot be selected for orders. Ordering the rest of his squad works also.
So I have one dwarf blanked out (possibly the slow one. I waited for another month but nothing changed) and another soldier not selectable, but I'm down 6 pop. What gives? The mission report was a single line hinting that the exploration happened. No account of any missing or killed explorers. No one died in the meanwhile, it all happened in late summer.
DFHack's fix/retrieve-units did not help either.
|Additional Information||The save is imported from 0.43.05. If that is a dealbreaker, I'll try to recreate the situation. But I read that saves from 0.43 *should* work.|

Did this happen on the first and only outside mission or were there other occasions with population count behaving properly? Beside DFhack, are you using any other mods and tools?

I recreated the issue - seems to happen every time. Over the course of 2 missions, pop total went from 141->131->123. All 8 squads still show as full, but there are 3 positions blanked out.
In this save, I aborted the first mission and am about to embark on the second one. You might get a slightly different pop count, but you should see a reduction nonetheless.
Update: It appears that outsiders that applied for residency previously will have their status removed. A bunch of them re-applied after they returned, but they now show up on the visitors tab. This may be the cause of the problem.
I only use DFHack. With 0.43.05 I waited until it was well into beta, and with 0.44.03 I waited until the first beta.
So to summarize:
When the squads returned, the non-dwarf soldiers were forced to give up residency and reapply for shelter, turning them into visitors (and I think a bunch of them must have left 'cause of the visitor limit).
Most of them however still occupied their spot on the squad list. Several units disappeared from the list; I don't know why yet in particular. Maybe they were the ones that did not or could not reapply and outright left. I'm not sure.
I also don't know if this issue accounts for all the missing pop, but it's a start.
