Summary0010509: more than 10 squads, issues with selecting individuals, etc
DescriptionVanilla or modded df, multiple versions (I have noticed it in at least the 43.xx versions, and probably earlier). When there are eleven or more squads, selecting individuals rather than whole squads has minor bugs: squads get assigned letters, and to select an individual from a squad (the last or any past tenth) user must scroll down, but then the selected squadmembers list is 'scrolled down' and cannot be scrolled back 'up'. Also, last squad in the squad list is unavailable to access (letter j). Also, sometimes (I have not figured out the exact steps to duplicate) the letter pressed selects the squad one letter lower on the list (pressing e selects squad d -- orders go correctly to squad d).
No crashes or other broken functions related to these issues, so minor.
Steps To ReproduceCreate a new world and new fort in dwarf mode, . Play until you have at least 11 adult dwarves, and assign each as a squad captain. Use the squad access and try to order individuals from the eleventh (or last) squad. Buggy.

Or as far as I can tell, use any game. Just get eleven or more squads somehow.

Ordering whole squads seems fine, but accessing individuals from squads is where the issues are.

I use traps and avoid combat, but I still am setting Dwarven militia up. Training is 2 Dwarves per month, instead of default 10. It can be changed in military-schedule menu. I also lowered pop limit from default to 100+10. This lets me to form 10 militia squads + 10 civilian miners/woodcutters. Avoids the issue of too many squads + get you back 1(1)-3(3) fps faster running game.

First I look in "u" menu for Dwarves. There I am marking 10 Dwarves (v - view, y - name/job customization) in job name customization with name of the new squad, while adding little "c" on end for commander. Then I am assigning commander through nobility screen as new militia captain. Then I am scrolling through list of all Dwarves in military-position menu and assign one by one the Dwarves, who have squad's name in their customized profession.

I hope my work around for this issue, will allow you to form proper squads of 10 Dwarves without pulling accidentally military Dwarves from other squads. For 200+20 Default Dwarves you can keep duplicates of all necessary civilian jobs and still form 100 Dwarves professional (peasant lol) military, instead of half civilian, half military militia.

I agree that already assigned to a squad military Dwarves, should not be showing up in the available recruits listing in military-positions menu. I hope it helps somehow. Have fun!
