Summary0001081: Shells disappear from inside underground stockpiles (being gnawed by vermin?)
DescriptionIn the new version, shells in my refuse stockpile that I'm keeping for mood dwarves seem to be decaying seasonally. I don't have a bonecrafter yet, so they should just be accumulating.

I wasn't watching my shells because... well.. why would I? So I'm not 100% sure that they are decaying, but I don't know where else they could be going. Are vermin eating them, maybe?
Steps To Reproduce1) have shells
2) have no shells
Additional InformationThe vermin remains no longer seem to be piling up, but then, I don't have any cats yet. Was there an fix for rotting in this version that didn't make the notes? If so it may have gone too far.
Tagsshell, vermin

Can you get a save right before the season change to demonstrate this? Also, is your stockpile outside or inside?

The stockpile is inside(several z levels down). I'd give you a save, but it seems every time one of my forts gets to about halfway through year 2, it becomes unstable a la http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=629 [^]

And I don't play with autobackup or anything (I really should, come to think of it).

So, sorry, theres no way for me to supply a save without starting a new fort and crossing my fingers.

Also this seemed to stop when I let a kitten out of the communal cage. I think the vermin must've been destroying the shells (which is in itself wierd).

It's possible that vermin are indiscriminately gnawing on all body parts, yeah.

I've had this problem too. I collected a dozen or so shells from turtles before the pools on the map dried up and when I looked back I only had 4 left in the refuse stockpile.

Dumping them into another room seemed to preserve them, so I'm guessing it IS vermin destroying them (I have no cats and the stockpile is full of rats and stuff).

bones, such as from rotting goblin arms or whatever also seem to be either decaying or being eaten by vermin. Unfortunately, skeletons are not destroyed (or if they are it is a very slow process).

I also have noticed that all my shells went away when I got a mood that needed them. I only use them for moods and I keep them in a refuse pile underground. I origionally had about 50 or so. Other refuse never goes away. Partial skeletons stay for 10 years at least.

Ill chime in with claims that this has happenened to me too.

I would also take wild guess that say that this is possibly linked to fix that enabled rotting vermin remains.

Seeing this in 31.12.

Both shells and bones are vanishing randomly from my underground refuse stockpile. The vanishing rate is relatively fast too, such that if I don't use up all of the shells/bones within a couple months they will begin to vanish.

I observed this in two different fortresses in 31.11 with an underground shell stockpile, specifically involving a rat each time. I watched the rat linger on a shell-occupied space, then leave an empty spot behind. Flies did not affect the shells and I did not observe any other vermin near the stockpile. Unfortunately, I did not keep a save of either fortress.

Confirmed in 31.12 - do vermin eat bones now or something? Is that the conclusion we've come to? Because that might be the cause of the bug - some old food-rot code affecting the bones and shells somehow?

When vermin chew on something they accelerate decay.
