Yeah, this is one from the old system:

It might just be me, but I find the adoption, specifically, only happens while paused in dig mode. Maybe I'm just (un)lucky? Maybe I just stay paused so long, all adoptions happen before I move to play mode?

I had about 14 adoptions, including an entire litter of kittens that were just born, adopt while designating mining. This is in 31.12

5 of the kittens adopted my militia commander, bringing his pet total to 6.

He's now the crazy cat dwarf...

I assume if I keep designating long enough, my 5 remaining strays will adopt as well.

Work around that I have found is to designate them for slaughtering RIGHT when the announcement hits. Or not have female cats (my preferred method).
