1. You should update to .31.03
2. Where is your Dwarf Fortress folder located?

1. I will, but I'm trying to finish a fortress I started in 31.01 and am not convinced it will transfer over correctly.
2. C:\df2010\df_31_01 is the Dwarf Fortress folder.

Do you have a gamelog.txt in your DF folder? What OS are you using?

This happens in the Arena mode as well, although its more variable.

I'm using 31.03

OS is Vista; I'm not at that machine right now, will check for gamelog.txt later. I think this is a problem that started recently, because I think I used to be able to see more events in this game. If necessary, I can try launching my seasonal saves to narrow down when it started.

Yes, there is a gamelog.txt file. It's 60,199 K in size, which might be an issue.

Hmm,I'll check my gamelog.txt the next time I do the Arena mode, this seems similar to what I observed.

Hmm. Rename gamelog.txt to something else (or delete it) to force the game to create a new one, and see if that helps.

Tried that, it does not help. Out of curiosity, how does the gamelog interact with combat reports? Looking at gamelog.txt, there are a very large number of messages that only go into reports, never into announcements (e.g. "The war Dog bites The Zombie Gorlak in the right upper leg, but the attack passes right through!") Could the announcements screen be choking on those? (Messages keep going to gamelog.txt, it's just the in-game display that is losing them.)

Anything that goes into a combat report doesn't go into the main announcements or gamelog, with maybe a few exceptions like martial trances and deaths. I don't think it should be "choking" on those, but it's possible I guess.

Is there any pattern to the types of announcements that vanish from the announcements screen? Also, have you modified your announcement options in /data/init/announcements.txt?

I haven't made any modifications to announcements.txt, all I changed were some options in init.txt, and those were only done before embark. The only pattern I've been able to detect is that it drops everything before a fairly recent point, within the past day or two.

The combat line I listed above _is_ in gamelog.txt. It never goes into the announcement screen, but I pulled it right out of the text file and pasted it here. Whether it's supposed to go in there or not, I couldn't say, but it's in there along with thousands of its brothers.

Ah, yeah, I was wrong about the "or gamelog" part. I'm pretty sure it's normal for combat reports to go there.

Does this only happen with a particular save for you? Do Adv. Mode announcements act normal?

I've never played Adventure Mode.

This is also the only 31 game I have, but I have seasonal saves. Autumn 1055 gave me 16 days of reports, several screens worth. Spring 1056 gives me 8 days, half of one screenful. Summer 1056 gives me 7 days (13.5 screens). Autumn 1056 gives me 1 day (half a screen). Winter 1056 gives me 1 day (1 screen). Spring 1057 gave me 1 day (28th Obsidian, 3 screens). Current (14th Granite 1057) gives me 1 day (1 screen).

So it's something that started within the past game summer, at least at the highest severity.

Analysis using tools such as DFHack indicates that DF seemingly has a limit of 3000 announcements/reports at any given moment (with new ones bumping old ones out of the list); the problem is that combat (and especially sparring) can generate a huge number of announcements in a short period of time, causing old messages to disappear even when they were only a few weeks (or even days) old.

Still in 40.23. Save: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=10386 [^]

I have two squads sparring and can see just like 1-3 days back in announcements (like 2 to 5 announcements).

Am playing the 32 bit 0.43.05 version on a 64 bit win 10 PC (so as to use dwarf therapist - can't use DT with the 64 bit latest DF version) and this problem is occuring. I've played a few different embark sites but this is the first time I've noticed it happening. I don't use anything other than DT with DF. This particular embark site started out ok, it's now the month of Felsite in the year 128 (start year was 125) and it's the first time it's started to occur.

Would like to upload the save file or whatever is appropriate to help here, but can't see an option to do so here. Let me know how to upload if you'd like any of the files.

Note that the combat log is fine, it's only the announcements log that appears to be affected.

@Ekara: Please upload your compressed save folder and gamelog.txt to DFFD:

Then provide a link in this bug report. Thanks!

Hi Loci. Please note that between my initial comment and your response I'd progressed through the game to near the end of the month of Hematite of 128. At this point it seems like the game is starting to list the announcements again as when you start the save it has about a weeks worth of announcements. Quietust (4/12/2012) might be on to something as, when I first experienced this problem back in Felsite 128 my feral munchkins happened to be in the middle of an offensive against a pack of Giant Dingos (they won't take _my_ babies!). I thought I'd try mounting another offensive to see if the problem started up again as per Quietust's suggestion, and so set the munchkin pack off against some suspicious Deer via the squad/kill command (all available soldiers), and yes, the problem of announcements being wiped started up yet again by the first few days of Malachite 128.

Edit: ...and please pay no attention to the fact that I haven't really set up a fortress front gate defense yet. The bridges have yet to be constructed.
