Summary0003335: Dug out areas suddenly become 'undug' after re-embark without reclaim
DescriptionDigging out a few rooms in a freezing tundra, when suddenly the map reverted to it's undug state, trapping the miners and various stockpiles in the grey area. The miners aren't dead - I can zoom to them from the 'u' screen, though I can't actually see them. When I designate the area around their supposed location to be dug, nothing happens. Items now buried in the cliff still show up in the stocks screen.

I had a similar issue. Embarked to a new area, started doing some channeling for an entrance and opening area to be overlooked by towers. I put my temporary stockpiles inside the channeled area, digging out the ramps.

All of a sudden, the whole area became 'un-channeled'. However, about half the area underground was still visible with my stocks, and the other half had turned dark.

I was able to re-dig the area (adding in speed=0 as I was in a terrifying biome), and go on about everything. However, the stockpiles are unable to be removed, and my workers don't use ramps, only stairs. That locked several workers up when they tried to do a construction but wouldn't use the ramps - I had to dig out stairs.

This was on my second attempt to the area, and parts I had previously dug out in the first attempt were reverted too in a similar manner. I didn't do a reclaim, merely re-embarked to the same spot.

Are you sure it was undug, or just hidden?

Are you sure you didn't cause a cavern collapse?

100% positive. The cavern didn't collapse, the ground just reappeared and I had to rechannel it. I was digging from the surface - there's nothing to collapse down and remake the surface. Not a message, either. The screen just flashed.

I had to re-dig the area, completely. However, the area I had just channeled had stockpiles there that I had previously placed, with areas.. hidden, I would guess. About half of it became hidden, the rest still showed where I had previously been. Parts of my stockpiles were hidden too, so it wasn't just that that kept it.

If I had to guess, it was something of a sort of an issue with memory clearing - I abandoned the previous fortress, and it didn't completely clear the memory of it. But that's only a guess. I should note that on a second look, not all of the areas I had dug on the first attempt were reverted - only maybe 75% of them. The rest was normal. The weirdest thing was seeing a carpenter's workshop half hidden, half not, in an area. One that I had just built.

I can't remove any stockpiles, either, that were in that glitched spot. Nor do any ramps work either.

I'll attempt to reproduce the bug tomorrow. I assume it's something to do with abandoning (or potentially crashing before having a chance to save) and re-embarking.

It wasn't a collapse. Three miners were trapped inside, but were alive and unwounded - I could zoom to them using the 'u' screen, but couldn't see them. There was no collapse message, and the terrain above was unaffected.

I had the same thing happen earlier, though I think it happens when a check is made for weather conditions, such as rivers/brooks thawing and the like. Mine came shortly after a brook I was next to thawed, and I believe that the lake that I was building next to was supposed to thaw as well.

However, in my case it didn't undig everything. There was still a ramp up space in the ice that wasn't filled in.

DO you have a save just before the incident occurs or at second best a save with them embeded into the stone with instuction on who to zoom to?

Sadly I do not. But, I can try to reproduce it.

I ended up deleting the related saves because it kept freezing up afterwards. I'm assuming it's because the lake that I was building next to was frozen, then suddenly melted (Happened after the weird undigging event). Or, perhaps it could have been something else.

Damium had this to say in 0003378:

Abandoned and embarked again in the same location without reclaim after an early mistake left me with no picks or miners. After a bit of reclaiming items and designating stockpiles it started to rain. Right after that the embark location reset. Everything that was dug out before is now back trees that were cut down are back etc.

Trees that were cut down in the first embark now show as a red T and just show "Tree" when viewed. Shrubs that were picked show a red V. Some of my dwarves are stuck underground.

When reproducing it seems to happen whenever the weather changes (second test had it happen when the snow melted). Did not happen when I used reclaim mode directly. Perhaps the bug is that embark mode is available when it shouldn't be.

A save before/after an occurrence of such would be appreciated.

Can't corroborate/no save. If anyone is able to provide a vanilla save where this is happening, please notify a manager on the forums.
