Summary0009399: Goblin snatcher moves to human hamlet, starts imprisoning abducted children in human town
DescriptionThe root cause is that scholars, bards and their family remain members of their original civ, even after they move to or grow up in a site controlled by another civ to study. This is probably intended behavior.

This particular story starts with the goblin poet Strodno Fellscrape, a citizen of the Uncertain Flies. In 53, she moved to the hamlet of Faintbaker in the Girdled Empires. In 64, she married Song Menaceknife, lord of the dark pits of Lionfiends. Their son Bosa Cruelraven grew up in Faintbaker and became a bookbinder there in 77.

That was also the year that he married his wife, the snatcher Strodno Terrordistrust. Before they got married, she had been kidnapping children and taking them to Crushedpoisons, the capital of the Uncertain Flies. After the wedding, she moved to Faintbaker and began taking her captives to Taupecrow, the capital of the Girdled Empires.

Unlike children imprisoned in dark fortresses, the kids taken to Taupecrow did not become members of the host civ upon reaching adulthood. Apart from a few that escaped, they remained prisoners until they died. This does not seem like intended behavior.
Steps To ReproduceYou can't directly cause this bug to occur because you have no control over the actions of people during world generation. However, a large world with lots of sites and civilizations should increase the chance that something like this will happen.

I've seen something like this and was wondering about it. Abductees tend to behave weirdly in general too, I haven't completed a prisoner rescue because they're all roaming around playing pretend and tend to be hostile to me.

I've seen quite a few hamlets and towns with prisoners listed and was very confused because I have no clue where they're supposed to be.

154: Cemirlulush, "Shieldclub", hamlet
        Owner: The Soaked Band, humans
Parent Civ: The Quiet Kingdom, humans
        lord: Ova Birthlace, elf
        24 elves
        97 humans
        50 horses
        19 dogs
        10 blue peafowls
        15 cats
        10 ducks
        1 elf outcast
        2 dwarf slaves
        3 elf slaves
        1 human slave
        2 elf prisoners

Typically, human civilizations take prisoners and slaves when they conquer a site. Obviously, the situation I reported is far from typical.

Dippedlilac is a different site but actually a town, and this is exactly the bug you're talking about: http://i.imgur.com/qOSZ48o.png [^] where the guy married someone and moved to another site then just kept snatching and imprisoning kids.

Really confusing because the queen of one of the elf sites at war with the founders of Dippedlilac is imprisoned there, but she inherited the position later I think, and was imprisoned after being snatched.

That's the same bug for sure. One possible fix would be to have the host civilization consider the snatcher a criminal/outcast for doing this. I don't think kidnapping is consistent with the ethics of any non-goblin civilization in-game.

It is almost impossible to return snatched kids to where they're supposed to go. They either:

A. Leave your group and try to attack you.
B. Leave your group, play pretend and stay in their cells
C. Actually follow you, but then chase after any enemies they see and immediately get killed while doing so.

C is the rarest of all, happening in less than 10% of cases - and it's the closest to intended behavior, too.

Another example from my save: goblin thief Bax Teachcurse lives with her dancer husband in Clearbeards, a forest retreat of the Drink of Swamps. Thanks to her efforts, Clearbeards is home to 52 dwarf prisoners and one elf prisoner.

Twist: the elf prisoner was a citizen of the Drink of Swamps when he was abducted, but at the time, he was living in a dwarven fortress. I guess that made him fair game?

More details: if the snatcher lives in a site without a local government/occupying bandit group, then he/she will bring children to that site. They will stay at the site indefinitely, since the game does not consider them prisoners (it seems that, to be considered a prisoner, an NPC must be "held" by a site-controlling group or a monster).

Hah, that explains why when I claimed a site by evacuating the current rulers (army was en route) and having them wait outside the keep walls, when I retired and unretired there was a goblin thief hanging out in the keep with me.
