|0000949||Dwarf Fortress||Adventure Mode -- Movement||public||2010-04-10 15:12||2016-05-18 13:11|
|Assigned To||Toady One|
|Target Version||Fixed in Version||0.43.03|
|Summary||0000949: Can't dive/surface in water deeper than 2 Z-levels|
|Description||When swimming through a lake, I have discovered that if you try to dive down ('>') and the water is deeper than 2 Z-levels, it won't do anything. When I attempt to dive under in 2 Z-level depth water, it works fine. There are also problems with surfacing using '<' if you are below 2 Z-levels of water.|
|Steps To Reproduce||Find a deep lake and swim over to a spot that is deeper than 2 Z-levels of water. If you hang out at the ramp-edge, you can test all the movement combinations like I did in the Additional Information.|
|Additional Information||When I walked up to the edge going down from the second Z-level to the third Z-level, I am blocked from moving swimming above the ramp. If I do an alt-move, I am presented with three options: [direction]-above, [direction] and [direction]-below. All three of these options work correctly.|
If I choose to move [direction]-below, then I cannot surface ('<'), but I can move normally on the same (3rd) Z-level. If I chose [direction], then I can use '<' to surface, but I cannot use '>' to dive down. If I chose [direction]-above, I am at the surface and cannot dive down using
'<' at all.
(Untested) I don't know if the first Z-level of water stops you from falling. If not, this means that if you fell into water deeper than 2 Z-levels of water, your character couldn't swim up unless you find a ramp to 2 Z-level deep water in time...

A correction: yes, you can use '>' or '<' normally if you are on the second Z-level.

Another thing I noticed is that if you have an air tile above the water you are swimming in and try to swim into a water tile that doesn't have air above it (this example, I was swimming in an underground cavern), it blocks you with no message. I think this is intentional, but it is probably related to the above bug.
What it should do in the cave would be to give a prompt: "You are swimming into a cavern with no air pockets. Do you really want to continue?" If you are underwater already, it shouldn't care...

@smjjames: Did you try using the alt key plus the > or whatever?
Yeah, tried that. They both do nothing as far as I can tell.

It seems if you have no swimming skill in the most recent versions (.19 and previous) you cannot escape from water using ramps while drowning. Also, moving carefully down a ramp (alt direction to the down ramp, select direction/below) into water stuns you.
A couple versions previously (with swimming skill), I was able to swim down, but not swim back up.
Tested and confirmed for 0.40.19
As a Grand Master swimmer I could use a ramp to automatically move down to the 2nd underwater Z level and use it to go back up again. I could not dive underwater from the surface above 3 levels of water. I could also not surface from the 2nd underwater level without using the ramps.
