Summary | 0002858: Animals somehow giving birth with no male
Description | Ok, for some reason, my camel had no male, and gave birth, now my dogs had no male, and somehow gave birth. ...Is this a bug, or... are males of other creatures doing this?

Traders' animals can get them pregnant, or they can arrive pregnant. Does that explain it? |

As for the camel, if you're in a desert, that can be it as well. Traders animals seem to be able to spread their 'spores' right through trader cages. |

I'm pretty sure i never had any caravans carry any animal that was any of those. Unless somehow lions, tigers, and wolves count. |

I think he was referring more to the traders' pack animals. I know I had precisely one camel, and it gave birth after the first dwarven caravan, what with its frisky, opportunistic pack camels, came and went. |

pack animals of the same species can impregnate animals, and every creature in DF reproduces through spores, so a male and female just need to be on the same map together. That means merchants animals, animals in cages and wild animals passing by your fort can cause pregnancy. |

I'm pretty sure i never had any caravans carry any animal that was any of those. Unless somehow lions, tigers, and wolves count. You never had a single caravan carrying a dog? How do you know? |

However, animals that you own and are in cages won't spread spores, while merchant animals in cages seem to be able to spread spores. Go figure. |

Foot: It would tell me on the unit list. |

You check the unit list every single time you get a caravan, and you never overlook anything? And your caravans never brought a dog? Without a save, that's too implausible to act on. Feel free to reopen this if you have evidence. |
