Are you sure it's fresh water and not salt water?

Salt water has a lower freezing point than freshwater, plus he said its an island, so chances are its saltwater. Which would explain why he can't use pools as a water source.

Salt water has a lower freezing point than freshwater

I don't think DF models this.

Maybe not, but it is a fact.

I am unsure, as far as I know it should be freshwater, as the site is not connected by the coast. Unless I am mistaken at that being the only way water could be saltwater.

I am going to pump the water into a cistern to check if it freezes // is drinkable, if so, then the water is saltwater. It just seems weird as the island is as big as one region, and I'm directly in the middle of it.

Edit: Noticed I did not attach a link to the world just in case. Sorry about that.

Also, filled a cistern in the middle of winter, no water freezing.

I think I remember something about screw pumps no longer changing the water type in the new version, I coul easily be wrong though.

@Thndr: Is your cistern underground? Thats probably why it didn't freeze. Doesn't explain the rest of it though.

I abandoned the fortress in your save and re-embarked right next to it. As expected, I got the salt water warning:

It's a small island in the middle of an OCEAN, so this shouldn't be a surprise. That explains why they won't use the drinking zones.

As for it not freezing... the area is "Cold," but temperature is strange in DF. If it's below ground level, it won't freeze (IIRC). If you make an aboveground enclosure, it will probably freeze.

Must've accidentally skipped that warning. Kinda weird that water in the middle of the island is salt.

Well thanks for helping to figure out the issue so quickly. In the end it was myfault for missing the warning.
