0003618: Impossible to knock out an opponant with a head injury without killing them.
Exactly, the message "X has been knocked uncoconcious!" ONLY shows up after fatal brain injuries.

In fact all brain injuries are fatal, doesnt matter if its torn, torn apart, bruised, etc.
Target the head.

I've also seen this in the arena. I controlled a minotaur with a maul against five goblins. I struck one in the head multiple times. The first two times I got the "skull was shattered" message, the other times were lesser damage messages. The goblin lived until I gored it in the head with my horn, and it was conscious the whole time.

I think only pain can cause unconsciousness, and if part of the spine or more specific sensory nerves are damaged the victim isn't feeling any.

Are you sure that lesser injuries to the head don't knock people out momentarily?
Like a thrown small rock or a training sword hit. At least I certainly remember experiencing this in previous 31.xx versions.

I tried small objects and it wont knock them out, you need a brain injury to knock them out without pain or choking.

But since ALL brain injuries are fatal (even bruising) it kinda defeats the point

I think bruising the brain should knock enemies unconscious, and tearing should insta-kill them.

It's possible to knock enemy unconscious with a blow to the head without killing him. I just did it in the arena. Here's a screenshot of the announcements http://i56.tinypic.com/mbokth.jpg [^]

04/11/2013 Toady One Let's see, you can set the combat state in the arena now, from lethal combat without quarter down to brawls and horseplay, and you can also turn morale on and off -- I did that mainly to test yielding and to fix some issue there with aardvarks surrendering and so on. Unarmed combat is more survivable, and on the other hand you don't have to actually damage somebody's brain to knock them out now. I didn't go too deeply into that, though, so as to move onward. That's the last of what I wanted to do with the combat changes. The next few days are going to be pretty busy though, with continued non-DFish stuff, so I should have some details of the next steps after the weekend. I'll probably be going back to the insurrections I had detoured away from to finish combat, unless other things need taking care of (stealth cleaning, perhaps).
