0008339: Bar-melting exploit no longer seems to work.
Supposedly one used to be able to designate a number of bars for melting, resulting in the same number of bars and increased experience (An exploit). I never used this exploit back in the day, as I didn't know it existed, but it seems to no longer exist anyway. Melting bars seems to result in the destruction of a number of bars, though still with gained experience. I destroyed 0000036:0000100 copper bars in testing in only 12 smelters, and then I tested with one of these smelters and a pattern holds, so it's not a matter of fractions. When testing with one smelter alone (though not a removed-rebuilt smelter, so may begin with its own fractions), I sat and watched dwarves work. In one round, melting 6 copper bars resulted in 3 copper bars, and melting 5 silver bars resulted in 3 silver bars. These were not waylaid or used in other processes: I have no others, and I specifically sat and watched as dwarves melted the bars, each time checking for a final product or not. So... just so people know, I am pretty sure this particular 'bug' or 'feature' is no longer in play.
Designate bars for melting, keep track of how many. Watch as products come out (or not).

That sounds like something that should be discussed on the forums. An exploit being made impossible isn't a bug.
