0008698: Dwarf entering a strange mood when isolated (e.g. on a stepladder) causes severe lag
As soon as a carpenter entered strange mood, my framerate dropped from 80~90 to 12~13. He was standing on a stepladder and gathering fruits when he got moody and didn't move for 6 in-game days. After that he suddenly claimed a workshop and the same moment the framerate became normal.

From 0008734, this seems to apply if a dwarf is unable to access the fortress for other reasons as well.

For what it's worth, I've had this happen for a non-mooding miner who decided to go on break after channeling and digging away the supporting wall (such that climbing up would involve very complicated maneuvers) but not completing the digging orders that would have brought him back into the connectivity to the rest of the fortress.

Also, when ordering repeated vertical channeling, dwarves seem to prefer to climb out, rather than just keeping on channeling until they hit bottom. Lag spikes occur *PER TILE THEY MOVE*, implying some sort of pathfind on a per-tile basis, which is obviously quite inefficient.

(In general, this seems less "bug" and more "feature in severe need of optimization", as this appears to be the pathfinding working as intended in a kludge movement mode that lacks a proper connectivity map.)

Got recently the same problem in 40.24 :
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=151121.msg6338320#msg6338320 [^]
A dwarf climbed for no reason on top of a wall , and as i observed often dwarves that climb on top of something (walls/trees) seem to have no idea on how to climb back down to the ground, that dwarves was taken suddenly by a "fey mood" and the game crawled to unplayable level.

Only managed to save my fort thanks to dfhack use of the teleport function, as once i teleported that buggy dwarf to the ground, he was able to pathfind correctly and the framerate went back to playable.

It's not a new bug though, i had a similar problem in one of the early df2014 release ( a 40.0x) happening to a non-mood dwarf that, in a cavern for some reason jumped down from a bridge on to a giant mushroom top.
Once he was on top of it , there was no way for him to get back to the bridge (it was 2 Z level over his head) and the game went immediately to unplayable level so i couldn't even order the build of a stair to give a path to that dwarf.
And i without DFHack at the time, the fort was then completely lost due to that unplayable lag.

Same problem here: I had sealed away a vampire. The moment he got into a strange mood, the game instantly dropped to 1 FPS.

I let him out of his vault, and instantly everything returned to normal.

I have been getting pretty FPS drops just out of nowhere I think it could be pathfinding for singing and what not. Might be the big songs or dances that needs more people for it and it messes up other people coming into the tavern. might be related or at least caused more often by 0009252

This is still happening in 0.47.04

I've got a dwarf/werebeast citizen that I've isolated in a walled off area of my fort and just got the strange mood message. FPS dropped from 100 to 17

Just saw this in 0.47.05

Dwarf became possessed while picking fruit. He was standing in a tree directly above the stepladder but couldn't path to the workshops. An other gatherer eventually took his ladder and he was still stuck, so we cut down the tree and he immediately ran to the workshops.

This problem is still around in V50.01 on Steam.

Here's a link to my save file: https://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=16191 [^]
And here is a video of the bug: https://youtu.be/k99HKejkAuA [^]

Hope this helps.
