Summary0000362: Interrupted by forgotten beast -- Through 20 z-levels of solid rock with no possible path
DescriptionMy hunter who is outside hunting, gets interrupted by a megabeast in an underground cave complex. The cave complex, is 20 z-levels down, and I haven't even connected a stairway down to the caves yet, I simply revealed it and decided to wait, so there's 4 levels of open space making any possibility of pathing up to me completely insane.

I suppose from a strictly insane standpoint he's probably the closest dwarf, if it can fly and phase through solid rock...

Additional InformationPossibly another pathing related issue.

Is it a message-spam type interruption? Was the hunter previously wounded by such a creature?

the good news, is it only appears to have interrupted one dwarf, one time. This happened pretty much instantly as the megabeast arrived. So far, no further interrupts from the creature lurking far far beneath us.

"The forgotten beast <<Name Hidden to not be a Spoiler>> has come! ... "
"Led megstukon, Planter cancels Plant Seeds..."
"The Planter led Mengstukon has organized a party..."
"Monon erithzimesh, Hunter cancels Eat: Interrupted by Forgotten Beast."

I paused instantly thinking OMG how did it get up here... zoomed to the hunter, who was standing on the surface of the world. Searching around, I found the beast, directly below him, 21 z-levels away.

I don't plan on completing the stairway to go find it right away, so if it spooks anybody else, I'll update with it.

"Stray kitten (tame) cancels Clean self: Interrupted by Forgotten Beast."

The situation has not changed. Forgotten beast is at Z-20 maybe Z-21

My main fortress is on z-4.
The lowest level my stairs extend to is Z-15 hanging over a solid 5 levels of open space.

The kitten in question, was apparently hanging out on the stairs up at z-1.

There is a forgotten beast more or less directly below the kitten at z-21 in the water. This time I guess you could argue that it might be visible, but there are other dwarves lower on the staircase that presumably would see it first that are not reacting.

Now that I've finally decided to go ahead and try to connect my stairway to the ground, I am being actively spammed to death by the forgotten beast. it appears I may have to make "other plans" for connecting a path down to this underground area.

I'm watching the beast somewhat while I am trying unsuccessfully to connect a path down to the underground area and I would have to say that dwarves react to this beast from a truly outrageous distance. the closest "forgotten beast" to my workers is at least 60 tiles away from any of my workers.

While I appreciate my dwarves being cautious about large unfriendly hostile creatures, this behavior may be a tad extreme. However I must admit, I am becoming rather eager to see just how much "fun" things get when I finally do manage to encounter this beast.

geez... alright, this is quickly becoming ridiculous. Apparently I'm going to have to completely wall off and abandon my main staircase. My staircase is now only two z levels away from the ground ground of this underground complex.

Interrupts from the forgotten beast have ground all activity in my fortress to a screeching halt. I don't know much about this beasts true combat capabilities but it's spamming capabilities are a true force to be reckoned with.

I'm now going to try to persuade all my dwarves away from the main staircase and somehow try to cut an alternate path back down to this underground cave complex in such a way as to not breach through into it until I can actually walk out onto solid ground.

While I fully realize this beasts ability to interrupt tasks is to some degree an intentional behavior, the extreme level of interruption and enormous range from which it can do so makes it extremely difficult to actually enter an underground area once a beast is present.

Things are looking more than a little Grim. I fear this may be the end of the once proud fortress of Orrundomas. All attempts to bypass the main staircase and cut new paths into the fortress have failed.

Insanity has gripped the fortress, literally dozens of dwarves are now insane, and all others are cowering in fear. While only a few have died so far, I fear that death is inevitable at this point, everyone is starving to death.

A word of advise, if you plan to connect to an underground complex, either get down there fast before any forgotten beasts arrive, or wall it off immediately after you find it and turn away. connecting an open staircase through open space to the ground is a recipe for disaster.

I'll leave it to the judgement of others to decide if this behavior is intentional, or a bug. I'll be storing away the save files and the seasonal backups for anybody who may care.

I'd be frustrated at this catastrophe, but I'm way too busy laughing my ass off. Good times. ;)

I've revisited a copy of this save with 0.31.03 in an attempt to reproduce it and seem to be unable to recreate the massive interrupt storm I experienced before. This was on a medium region, so it could potentially have been large enough to trigger the flow related pathing blowout that has been fixed.

So I'm going to go ahead and have you close this one for now. If it resurfaces I can always reopen it later.

I just had the same problem in 0.31.03, but it was a Zombie Manera instead of a Forgotten Beast. Earlier my main stairwell breached the ceiling of a cavern, and I had my masons wall the floor off so flyers couldn't get in. Apparently one of those got suspended without me noticing, so a hole was left. Instead of facing a flyign creature which my dwarves could kill however, I'm now faced with a creature which can't reach me, but can grind my fortress to a halt.

interesting... so it does still exist, but it's not easy to reproduce the interrupt storm even when using my own save where it happened before...

I am having this issue as well. on 0.31.16. None of my dwarfs will complete any actions even a long ways away from the beast. It resides 19 z-levels below and cannot enter the fortress. I am playing on OSX.

Edit: Just to clarify this beast cannot fly and cannot get into my fortress but still seems to interrupt them. I have the same setup where a portion of my main staircase is above open space which is above the beast, causing all of my dwarfs to be interrupted from any action they take.

Dito what others have said. I have a FB that is in a cavern that I breached and then sealed up. The FB came and since there are stairs near the wall the FB shoots fire though the wall and hits stuff on the other side. So, there isn't a path yet I get the "interrupted by FB" spam and fire attacks. Save if needed.

Please reopen this report or PM me on the forums if you have a save that demonstrates this bug in the latest release.
